Fish and Wildlife airplane forced to land on tundra

Donlin Creek helicopter comes to the aide of downed Fish and Wildlife aircraft. Uninjured pilot airlifted to camp by Donlin Employees and then to Bethel by Fish and Wildlife.

Judge rules against clean-water initiative

A Superior Court judge in Fairbanks has ruled that the Clean-Water Initiative is unconstitutional. The judge's ruling is based on the fact that the initiative will usurp the Legislature's job of allocating state resources.

"Initiative law in Alaska requires that the Legislature retain discretion to allocate public assets such as water to all uses, including large-scale metallic mining, and not just to salmon and downstream communities," Judge Douglas L. Blankenship wrote.

Rio Tinto begins divesting with Greens CreekMine

Hecla Mining Co., a minority owner of the Greens Creek Mine near Juneau, plans on purchasing the mine from majority owner Rio Tinto for $750 million.

Hecla Mining, based out of Idaho, has been a joint partner with London-based Rio Tinto for the past 20 years. The sale will involve a combination of $700 million in cash and $50 million in Hecla stock.

Stevens makes rare visit

U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens made a visit to Western Alaska last week, passing through Bethel on Oct. 16.

While in Bethel, he visited a number of facilities and addressed the Bethel City Council. He said he had just come from visiting Alaska?s National Guardsmen training in Mississippi.
